Approximately 1.6 billion people worldwide do not have access to electricity, and sub-Saharan Africa is one of the least electrified areas. Yet, access to electricity is essential to development: it enables businesses to stay open longer, household tasks to be performed more efficiently, health care facilities to provide services, and children to study after dark. Many of the poorest populations turn to fuel-based lighting, which is inefficient and requires the expense of continual replenishing? Additionally, it can be dangerous to operate, with the potential for burns and fuel spills; contributes to indoor air pollution; and emits millions of tons of greenhouse gases annually. Battery-powered devices require replacement batteries to continue functionality, resulting in additional monetary costs and environmental impacts.
With access to light, members of rural and forgotten communities will be able to send their children to school, and give them a good start in life which can impact positively on the next generation. To offer children the benefits of a modernized education – one where equipment can be powered, computers can be run, and classes can be held in a well-lit and safe environment –This is key to breaking the cycle of poverty.
